Yep, yet another lets fix it when it ain’t broke scenario! Facebook has ’simplified’ the security settings on your profile, ehrm, apparently for your own good!
Weird as it may seem but apparently as Facebook users we are not able to decide which of the ‘many’ security settings we wish to have on our profile, so Facebook has chosen to make those for us. Their excuse is that ‘we’ feel the current settings are too complicated! Who is the ‘we’ they are referring to? Seems to me that with 200 million users + ‘we’ have been doing quite OK without any changes thank you very much!
Unfortunately, like the old ToS fiasco we are facing these changes without much notice from Facebook. They’re just slipping them in there and hopefully not messing around with ‘our’ current settings by doing that. I just hope this does not turn nasty again, something like some poor abused wife with a Facebook account suddenly facing her enraged x-husband discovering her profile thanks to these new FB changes, ‘helping her to share more information with more people’. Seriously, though this does not impact current users as much as new users, if at all, it does seem a very odd thing to do. People need strong privacy tools online or they may be exposed to some seriously wrong attention.
As for new folks, you simply won’t have a choice, when you join and create your profile, you will have a very simplified signup security setting to select – I would strongly advise you to select ‘Limited’, as you will never understand just what dangers may lurk under the Facebook hood until you experience what an ‘open’ profile attracts in weirdos.
